Changping District, once known as Changping County, is a busy area in the suburbs of north and northwest Beijing. Located just beyond the city center, it is a place where many people live and work. As of November 2020, Changping was home to over 2 million people, making it the most crowded suburban district in Beijing.
The district has grown a lot over the years, becoming an important part of Beijing’s outer areas. It offers many homes, schools, and workplaces for families and workers who travel into the city each day. Changping is also known for its mix of modern buildings and green spaces, making it a lively and developing community.
History
Changping has a long history dating back to the Han dynasty, when it was known as Changping County and Jundu County. Over time, its status changed. During the Northern Wei period, Changping was part of Jundu, but this reversed in the Eastern Wei era. In the Ming dynasty, under the rule of Zhengde, Changping became a subprefecture and controlled areas such as Miyun, Shunyi, and Huairou. By the Qing dynasty, during the Yongzheng era, these areas moved to Shuntian Prefecture. After the Xinhai Revolution, Changping became a county again and was transferred to Beijing from Hebei in 1956.
Geography
Changping District covers a large area of 1,430 square kilometres and is home to many towns and scenic spots, like the Datangshan museum. It is about 34 kilometres from Beijing's city center and has plenty of natural resources.
The district has a humid continental climate, with warm summers and cold winters. The average temperature is about 13 °C, and July is the warmest month, while January is the coldest. Most of the rain falls in July.

Economy
In 2017, the total value of goods and services made in Changping District was 83.97 billion yuan. This means each person in the district helped create about 40,700 yuan worth of goods and services that year.
Features
Changping District has many interesting places to see. You can visit the Ming Dynasty Tombs, which are very old and important. There is also the Cloud Platform at Juyong Pass, one of the important passes of the Great Wall of China. During the Triathlon at the 2008 Summer Olympics, athletes competed at the Triathlon Venue located here. Additionally, there is Wonderland Amusement Park (Beijing), a fun place for families, and Qincheng Prison near Xiaotangshan, which belongs to the Ministry of Public Security.
Central government
The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention has its main office in this area.
Transport
Changping District has many ways to get around, including six metro lines and one commuter line. The metro lines are part of the Beijing Subway, and they help people travel to different parts of the city.
The metro lines include Line 5, Line 8, Line 13, Line 17, Line 18, and the Changping line. There is also a commuter line called Line S2 and the Huairou–Miyun line operated by the Beijing Suburban Railway. These lines connect Changping to many important places.

There are many schools for younger students too. Some public schools are Changping District No. 1 High School and Changping District No. 2 High School. Private schools include Beijing Huijia Private School, Beijing Royal School, and the Korean International School in Beijing, which used to be in Changping District.
