Chenango, New York

Chenango is a town in Broome County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the town had a population of 10,983 people. It is located northeast of Binghamton, a larger nearby city.

History

The area of Chenango, New York was first settled around 1787. The Town of Chenango was officially created in 1791, before Broome County itself was formed. It was one of the original towns in the county, and many other towns later came from it.

Geography

The town of Chenango covers a total area of 34.3 square miles, with most of it being land and a small part being water. The Chenango River runs along the eastern edge of the town. Major roads such as Interstate 81, U.S. Route 11, and New York State Route 12 all go through Chenango.

Demographics

In the year 2000, there were 11,454 people living in the town of Chenango. Most people, about 97%, were White. Smaller groups included African American, Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander people, as well as those from other races or from two or more races. About 1% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

Many families lived in the town, with about one-third of households having children under 18. Most households were made up of married couples living together. The average family had nearly three people. The town had people of all ages, with many in their 40s and 50s. The average income for a family was around $54,000, but some families lived below the poverty line.

Subdivisions

Chenango, New York, has several small communities called hamlets. These include Castle Creek, Chenango Bridge, Chenango Forks, Glen Castle, Hinman's Corners, Kattelville, Newmans Corners, Nimmonsburg, and West Chenango. Each of these places is a small grouping of homes and local shops, and they are connected by roads and exits from major highways like Interstate 81 and Interstate 88.
