Chiesanuova

Chiesanuova is one of the nine castelli of San Marino. It means "New church" in the local Romagnol language, where it is called Cisanòva. As of January 2025, Chiesanuova is home to 1,191 people living in an area of 5.46 km².

The area was once called Pennarossa until changes in 1943–1944. Today, Chiesanuova is led by a Captain and a group of seven leaders called a Junta. Marino Rosti has been the Captain since 2020. The place touches two San Marinese areas and three areas in Italy, and it is split into seven smaller neighborhoods known as curazie.

History

The area now known as Chiesanuova was once home to a medieval castle called Busignano. In 1320, the people there chose to join San Marino. The name Chiesanuova, meaning "New Church," came about in the 1500s when the church of Saint Giovanni Battista in Curte was rebuilt, though that church no longer stands today.

Chiesanuova was previously called Pennarossa until its name was officially changed during administrative reforms in 1943–1944. It became one of San Marino's nine castelli, or administrative districts, in 1925. Before this official recognition, it was already thought of as a ninth district alongside the eight established in 1945.

Geography

Chiesanuova is a small area that borders several places. It shares its borders with San Marino, Fiorentino, and the Italian towns of Sassofeltrio, Verucchio, and San Leo. Inside Chiesanuova, there are seven smaller areas called curazie. These are Caladino, Confine, Galavotto, Molarini, Poggio Casalino, Poggio Chiesanuova, and Teglio.

Climate

Chiesanuova experiences a humid subtropical climate. This means it has warm, wet summers and cooler, milder winters.

Governance

Chiesanuova, like all nine castelli of San Marino, has its own local government. It is led by a Captain and a Junta with seven members. The Captain is the main leader and works with the Junta to make important decisions.

The Junta helps manage the town's money, plan events, and take care of public services. They also help protect the town's history and traditions. People in Chiesanuova vote every five years to choose the Captain and Junta members.
