The Cinque Terre (meaning 'Five Lands') is a beautiful coastal area in the northwest of Italy, located in La Spezia Province. It is made up of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. This stunning area, along with its coastline and surrounding hills, is part of the Cinque Terre National Park, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vernazza is even considered one of "I Borghi più belli d'Italia" or "The most beautiful villages of Italy."

Because of its rugged and steep landscape, people have built many terraces over the years, right up to the cliffs that look out over the Ligurian Sea. The villages are connected by paths, trains, and boats, since cars can only reach them with great difficulty through narrow and winding mountain roads. This makes Cinque Terre a special and popular place for visitors to explore.

History

Cinque Terre has been mentioned in records since the 1100s. The villages of Monterosso and Vernazza were the first to be settled, and others grew later. During the 1500s, people built forts and towers to protect against attacks. The area faced hard times from the 1600s to the 1800s but improved when a railway was built.

During World War II, Cinque Terre was damaged by bombing and fighting. Later, the railway caused many people to leave, and traditional jobs faded. However, tourism began to grow in the 1970s, bringing new life to the area.

The land is known for growing grapes and olives. Some people fished from Monterosso, and colorful houses were built there to attract visitors.

In 1997, Cinque Terre was named a special place by UNESCO for its important culture and nature. Sadly, in 2011, heavy rain caused floods and mudslides that hurt the villages, especially Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare.

Transport and tourism

Getting to Cinque Terre by car is possible, but finding parking can be difficult. The best way to travel is by train. Trains go from La Spezia and Genoa to all five towns in Cinque Terre, and also to other big places. The train stations in Cinque Terre are on the Genoa-Pisa line. Many long-distance trains don’t stop at every town, so you might need to switch to a regional train or the Cinque Terre Express. Some intercity trains stop at Monterosso Station.

There is also a ferry that goes between Levanto and La Spezia, stopping at the main villages except Corniglia, which isn’t on the coast and doesn’t have a place to dock. Boats also go to Genoa's Old Harbour, Lerici, and Porto Venere.

Paths

There are many walking trails in the park, and they each have special numbers to help people find them. One of the most popular paths is called the Sentiero Verde Azzurro, or the "Blue Trail." This trail connects the five villages. Sometimes, parts of the trails close because of landslides. A part of the trail called the Via dell'Amore ("Love Walk") from Riomaggiore to Manarola was closed for a while but has reopened.

Culture

Literature

The beautiful Cinque Terre has inspired many writers. The famous poet Eugenio Montale, who won a special prize called the Nobel laureate, wrote about Monterosso in his poem. He described the paths and lemon trees that make this place special.

Other famous writers like Dante Alighieri and Boccaccio also wrote about the Cinque Terre in their books. Even Gabriele D'Annunzio mentioned the special white wine from this area.

Cinema

In 2013, the movie The Wolf of Wall Street was filmed in Cinque Terre. The 2021 Disney/Pixar film Luca uses a made-up town called Portorosso, which looks just like Cinque Terre.

Videogames

The 2016 videogame Hitman includes a town called Sapienza. This town was based on Vernazza and other nearby places.

Food and wine

Because Cinque Terre is next to the Mediterranean Sea, it has lots of seafood. One special food is anchovies from Monterosso, which has special protection from the European Union. The hills around Cinque Terre have many steps where people grow grapes and olives. The area is famous for pesto, a tasty sauce made from basil leaves, garlic, salt, olive oil, pine nuts, and pecorino cheese. Focaccia, a type of bread, is also very common there. Farinata is a crunchy snack made from chickpea flour that you can find in many bakeries.

The grapes from Cinque Terre are used to make two special wines: Cinque Terre and Sciachetrà. These wines are made from Bosco, Albarola, and Vermentino grapes. In addition to wine, people in Cinque Terre enjoy grappa, a strong drink made from leftover grape skins, and limoncino, a sweet lemon drink served cold after meals.

Preservation

In 1998, Italy created a special area called the Cinque Terre protected natural marine area to help protect nature and support local communities. In 1999, the Cinque Terre National Park was established to keep the area's beauty and balance safe. Even with these protections, some parts of the land were at risk because fewer people were taking care of them. This led to the area being listed by groups that help save important places around the world. Thanks to support from American Express, a plan was made to help protect Cinque Terre for the future. Today, millions of people visit every year to enjoy its beauty.
