Classic Stage Company

Classic Stage Company, or CSC, is a classical theater company that performs Off-Broadway shows. It was founded in 1967 and is one of the oldest theater companies in the Off-Broadway area.
CSC is led by Producing Artistic Director Jill Rafson. Before her, John Doyle served as Artistic Director from 2016 until 2022. Their main stage is the 199-seat Lynn F. Angelson Theater, which used to be called the Abbey Theatre. This theater is located at 136 East 13th Street between Third and Fourth Avenues in the East Village near Union Square, Manhattan, New York City.
CSC’s productions have been recognized many times by important Off-Broadway theater awards. These include the Obie Award, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, Drama League Award, and in 1999, they received the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Body of Work.
Productions
The Classic Stage Company has performed many famous plays. Some recent shows include A Month in the Country by Turgenev with actors Peter Dinklage and Taylor Schilling, Allegro by Rodgers & Hammerstein, and The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Brecht with Christopher Lloyd. They have also staged works by famous writers like Stephen Sondheim, Anton Chekhov, and William Shakespeare, featuring well-known actors such as Ethan Hawke, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Mandy Patinkin.
Many talented actors have performed at the Classic Stage Company over the years, including F. Murray Abraham, Alan Cumming, Peter Dinklage, and many others. The theater continues to bring classic stories to life on stage.
Artistic directors
The Classic Stage Company has had many leaders over the years. Some of the past leaders include Christopher Martin, Craig Kinzer, Carey Perloff, David Esbjornson, Barry Edelstein, Brian Kulick, and John Doyle. The current leader is Jill Rafson.
Awards
The Classic Stage Company has received awards for many of its shows. One notable award is the Village Award, given by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation in 2002.
