Comoros at the 2008 Summer Olympics

The Beijing National Stadium, also called the 'Bird's Nest,' hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.

Comoros joined the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, from August 8 to August 24, 2008. This was Comoros's fourth time in the summer Olympics, starting from 1996. The team had three athletes: runners Mhadjou Youssouf and Feta Ahamada, and swimmer Mohamed Attoumane. Ahamada, who ran the 100 metres, was the flag bearer in the opening ceremony, the first woman to have this honor. None of the Comoros athletes moved past the qualifying heats.

Background

Comoros joined the Summer Olympics for the first time in 1996 at Atlanta and sent four athletes to compete in athletics. This was their biggest group of athletes so far. In the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, Comoros sent three athletes: Mhadjou Youssouf ran the men's 100 metres, Feta Ahamada ran the women's 100 metres, and Mohamed Attoumane swam the men's 50 metre freestyle. No athlete from Comoros has ever won a medal at the Olympics.

Comoros had two athletes in the running events at the 2008 Olympics. Mhadjou Youssouf, an 18-year-old runner, competed in the 100 metres and finished 55th out of 80 runners. Another runner, Feta Ahamada, also competed in the 100 metres and finished 52nd overall. Neither athlete moved on to the next round.

Swimming

The Beijing National Aquatics Center is where Attoumane competed in their events.

Mohamed Attoumane was the only swimmer from Comoros at the Beijing Olympics. He competed in the men's 50 metre freestyle race. Attoumane was 26 years old at the time and was competing in his first Olympic games. He swam in heat six on August 14 and finished last in his group. Out of all the swimmers, he came in 91st place.
