Crosby Ravensworth

A historic monument dedicated to Charles II located at Black Dub in Crosby Ravensworth Fell.

Crosby Ravensworth is a small village and community area in the Westmorland and Furness district of Cumbria, England. It is located about 4 miles east of the M6 motorway and the town of Shap. In the year 2001, the village had a population of 538 people, but by 2011, the number of people living there had dropped slightly to 517. This peaceful village is part of the beautiful countryside in northern England, offering a glimpse into rural life and history.

History

Charles II Monument

Crosby Ravensworth has a rich history. Ancient remains, such as a stone circle called the White Hag, can still be found there. In the nineteenth century, two special spoons from the Iron Age were discovered and are now kept in the British Museum in London. There is also a farm called Corsby Hall, which has the remains of an old moat around it. A monument at Black Dub marks the visit of Charles II of England in 1651. The area also has a site known as Robin Hood's Grave.

Crosby Ravensworth Fell

Crosby Ravensworth Fell is where the River Lyvennet begins. It is also crossed by the Coast to Coast Walk and has a large area of limestone pavement.

Notable people

Crosby Ravensworth has been home to many important people throughout history. John Langhorne was a math teacher at Giggleswick School. Reverend John Langhorne worked at several schools, including Tonbridge School and The King's School, Rochester, and served as a vicar in Lamberhurst. Reverend Thomas Langhorne started Loretto School. Another notable figure was Reverend Lancelot Addison, an English scholar who lived from 1632 until 1703 and became Dean of Lichfield.

Governance

There is an electoral ward named after Crosby Ravensworth. This ward goes from Bolton down to Great Asby. In the 2011 census, the ward had a total of 1,396 people.
