Crystal Cove State Park is a beautiful state park in California. It stretches along 3.2 miles (5.1 km) of the Pacific coastline and includes inland chaparral canyons and the historic Crystal Cove Historic District with charming old beach houses. The park is found partly in the city of Newport Beach and partly in an unincorporated area of Orange County, and it is part of the larger South Coast Wilderness area.
The park features coastal cliffs and a lovely beachfront cove located between the Pacific Coast Highway and the Pacific Ocean. It is situated southeast of Newport Beach and northwest of Laguna Beach. Covering 3,936 acres (1,593 hectares), Crystal Cove State Park was officially established in 1979.
Visitors can enjoy three miles (4.8 km) of sandy beaches and tide pools, a large 1,400-acre marine Conservation Area for protecting ocean life, 400 acres of sandy bluffs, and 2,400 acres of scenic canyons. The park is a wonderful place for nature walks, exploring tide pools, and enjoying the beautiful California coastline.
History
Before the Spanish arrived, local native people lived in villages around natural springs in the Crystal Cove area. Later, the area became part of a large ranch owned by the Irvine family. James Irvine II allowed friends and family to build cottages there, which became known as the Crystal Cove Community.
Over time, the area also became a popular camping spot. In the 1940s, trailers replaced tents, and it was renamed El Morro. In 2006, the area was changed into a park with campgrounds, a visitors center, and dining areas. Today, the Crystal Cove Historic District includes many old cottages from the 1920s and 1930s, some of which can be rented. The area has also inspired many artists and painters over the years.
Recreation
Crystal Cove is a great place for many outdoor activities. Mountain bikers enjoy the inland trails, while scuba and skin divers explore the underwater park. The beach is perfect for swimming and surfing, and lifeguards keep everyone safe year-round.
Besides the beach, the park has lots of space for hiking and horseback riding. There are 17 trails to discover through the woodland. Visitors can also camp in special backpacking areas that require hiking to reach, with each site fitting up to four people and no pets or fires allowed.
