Cycles of the Kings

The Cycles of the Kings are a special group of old stories from Ireland, written in what we call Old and Middle Irish. These stories are about kings who ruled Ireland long ago, some of whom might not have been real, while others were very real people. The tales include exciting adventures, battles, and even myths that help explain why certain traditions or customs started.

These stories cover many kings, from ones who might be made up, like Labraid Loingsech, to real heroes like Brian Boru. There are also famous kings such as Cormac mac Airt and Niall of the Nine Hostages. In those times, special poets called bards worked in the courts of kings. Their job was to remember and tell the stories of their families and kings through poems that mixed real history with myth.

One of the best-known stories is called Buile Shuibhne, or “The Madness of King Suibhne.” This tale, written in the 1100s, tells about a king named Suibhne who was cursed by a priest and turned into a creature that was part man and part bird. He had to live alone in the woods, far from other people. This story has inspired many poets even today and has been shared in new translations by writers like Trevor Joyce and Seamus Heaney.
