The Dan or Mano-Dan are a Mande ethnic group from northwestern Ivory Coast and neighbouring Liberia. There are about 700,000 members of this group, and their largest settlement is Man, Ivory Coast. They live close to other groups such as the Krahn, Kpelle, and Mano.
The Dan people are officially called Yacouba (or Yakouba). In Liberia, they are sometimes called Gio, a name that can be unkind.
They speak the Dan language, which belongs to the Southern Mande language family. The Dan are linked to the Maghan people of the old Ghana Empire and the Gbara of the Mali Empire.
One special part of Dan culture is their art, especially mask rituals called Ge or Gle. They also have a secret society named Gor, meaning "leopard" in their language. Gor is a peacemaking society and should not be mixed up with the harsh Ekpe society from Nigeria.
History
The Dan people originally came from a region to the north, now part of Mali and Guinea. By the 8th century, they lived in the northern part of Ivory Coast. In the 10th century, because of political problems, more people, and less land, the Dan moved south into the forest areas.
The Dan were known as strong warriors. One famous leader, Grougbay Zobaneeay, fought against other tribes and moved them far away. Another leader, Kipko Toh'ah-Gbeu, also led battles until he was hurt in a fight. Later, leaders made peace with other groups. After Liberia became a country in 1847, the government worked to bring peace to the Dan people, and by the early 1900s, things had settled down.
Economy
The Dan people are mainly farmers. They clear forest land each year to grow important foods like rice, cassava, sweet potatoes, and maize. They also grow cocoa, coffee, and rubber for trade. Women have small garden plots where they grow vegetables for their families or to sell at the market. They also collect greens from plants in the forest and make palm oil from wild palm trees for cooking and other uses.
Men do most of the farming, hunting, and fishing, while women take care of children and prepare meals. Children help by keeping animals away from the crops. The Dan also raise animals like cattle, sheep, goats, and chickens. Some animals, especially white ones, are only eaten during special celebrations or important rituals.
Culture
The Dan culture is built around the family, which includes a husband, one or more wives, and their children. Families live in groups called lineages, and these groups have their own areas in the town.
Dan people are known for their art, especially wooden masks and spoons. These masks are very important to them and have many different shapes and uses.
Men in Dan communities join special groups when they become adults. These groups help guide them and have a lot of influence in the community. Both men and women have their own groups. These groups use special masks to show their power and help solve problems in the community.
The Dan believe in a supreme god named Zlan, who they think created everything. They also believe in another power called Zu, which they think helps them in many ways. They use special ceremonies and objects to connect with Zu.
In the past, Dan homes were small huts made of mud and grass. Today, their homes are bigger with many rooms, but some traditions are still kept in certain areas.
