Delhi Sarai Rohilla railway station

Delhi Sarai Rohilla railway station (station code: DEE) is a busy railway station on the Indian Railways network. It is located just 4 kilometres east of the Delhi Junction railway station. This station is managed by the Delhi Division of the Northern Railway.

Many important trains stop at Delhi Sarai Rohilla, connecting Delhi to places like Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Over 20 trains start their journey from here, including the Duronto Express and special air-conditioned trains. This makes it a key spot for travelers heading to many parts of India.

Etymology

The word sarai means a place where travelers could rest. This train station gets its name from an old village nearby, which was named after a sarai built long ago by a man named Ruhullah Khan. He was an important person in the court of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The sarai was on a busy road between Delhi and the town of Ajmer. Over time, the name "Ruhullah" changed to "Rohilla," partly because of the Rohillas people who lived in the area of Rohilkhand near Delhi.

History

Background

Delhi Sarai Rohilla railway station opened in 1872 while building a railway line from Delhi to cities like Jaipur and Ajmer. It was located close to the old city of Shahjahanabad and helped trains travel to places such as Rewari, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. The tracks from Delhi Junction to Sarai Rohilla had two lines for trains, but the tracks going from Sarai Rohilla to Rewari only had one line until they were improved later. From Rewari, the tracks split off in five different directions.

Gauge conversion

In 1991, work began to change the old narrow tracks to wider tracks used today. In late 1994, one of the tracks from Delhi to Rewari was changed, and soon both tracks from Sarai Rohilla to Delhi were updated. This meant that older, narrow-gauge trains had to stop at Sarai Rohilla instead of Delhi.

By September 2006, the second narrow-gauge track from Sarai Rohilla to Rewari was also changed to wide tracks, and the old narrow tracks stopped running between Rewari and Sarai Rohilla. People could start using the new wide tracks in October 2007.

Infrastructure

Delhi Sarai Rohilla Terminal railway station is a special stop for trains leaving Delhi to go to places like Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. The station has a place to buy tickets, three lines where trains can stop to clean up, and five platforms where people can get on and off trains. Two platforms from a nearby stop called Vivekanandpuri are also connected to Sarai Rohilla by a bridge people can walk across.

The station is planned to be made even better as part of a big project called the Smart Cities Mission. In October 2016, important groups like the Ministry of Urban Development and Indian Railways agreed to work together to improve the station and the area around it. They want to make it easier and more comfortable for people to travel, connect different ways of getting around the city, and use the space around the station wisely.

Anand Vihar Terminal and Hazrat Nizamuddin are two other big train stations in Delhi where many trains start their journeys.
