Ica is a department in Peru that touches the Pacific Ocean on its western side. It shares borders with Lima to the north, Huancavelica and Ayacucho to the east, and Arequipa to the south. The area is managed by a regional government, and its main city, called the capital, is Ica. This region is special because of its unique landscapes and history.

Geography

The Department of Ica has a special landscape. It is the only area on the southern coast made up of flat lands, called coast plains, because the Andean Cordillera mountains rise up farther inland. Some natural folds in the earth have created moving sand dunes that form much of the Paracas Peninsula. In the southern part, there is a place called Marcona that holds large amounts of iron along the Pacific coast.

Ica's shape is influenced by two large rivers, the Pasco and Ica rivers, and a waterway named Rio Grande, which does not reach the ocean. Some of its water is used for farming in areas like Palpa, Nazca, and Ingenio. The Rio Grande’s path ends in dry land because sand and dry soil soak up its water. There are big deserts in Ica, such as Lancha Pampas. Places like Pozo Santo and Villacuri are very hot. Strong winds called paracas can create big sandstorms.

History

Ica has a very old history. People have lived there for about 10,000 years, and many important cultures grew there, like the Wari, Chincha, Nazca, Ica, and Paracas.

The Paracas culture lived there from around 700 BC to 200 BC. They were very good at making beautiful textile clothes and taking care of their dead in a special way called mummifying.

The Nazca culture is famous for its colorful pottery with interesting designs and lines. They lived from about 200 BC to 700 AD and built clever water systems using underground water, rivers, and rain.

Later, in the 1400s, the Inca Empire took control of Ica. Then, in 1563, the Spanish arrived and founded a town called Villa de Valverde del Valle de Ica. The area became known for its vineyard and cotton farms.

During the fight for Peru’s independence, a leader named José de San Martín landed near Paracas and prepared for battle in Pisco.

Political division

The Department of Ica is divided into five provinces, which are made up of 43 smaller areas called districts.
