History
Diadema started growing because of its location between the coast and the city of São Paulo. In the early 1700s, a road connected São Bernardo do Campo and Santo Amaro, helping people travel to the area. Today, two main streets, Antonio Piranga and Piraporinha, began as these old roads.
Until the 1940s, Diadema had four neighborhoods: Piraporinha, Eldorado, Taboão, and Vila Conceição. These areas were far apart and only linked by rough roads. Each neighborhood had its own life. Piraporina and Taboão were close to São Bernardo do Campo, while Eldorado was near São Paulo because of the Billings Reservoir. Vila Conceição was made up of farms.
Progress arrived in 1900 when Antônio Piranga built a steam-powered sawmill. This sawmill worked for twenty years, helping a furniture business in São Bernardo do Campo. Soon after, the old cattle path, Estrada da Vila Conceição, began to change with more industry and city growth.
Education
Diadema has many places for higher learning. There is a campus of the Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira, a branch of the São Paulo State Technological College, and a regional department of the Serviço Nacional de Aprendizagem Industrial.
