Districts of Malta
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Malta is a small island country in the Mediterranean Sea, and it is divided into different areas called districts to help organize its government and services. There are four main types of districts in Malta: regional councils, statistical districts, electoral districts, and policing districts. Each type of district has its own special job. For example, regional councils help with local government work, while electoral districts are used for voting in elections. These districts make it easier for Malta to manage its people, places, and resources. Learning about these districts can help us understand how Malta is organized and run today.
Regional Councils
Malta is divided into six regions to help with local government and administration. These regions were set up by laws starting in 1993 and were changed a few times. By November 2021, the country had six regions.
Each region has a Regional Council. This council includes a Regional President, a Deputy President, an Executive Secretary, and some members. The council helps with things like planning and working with local groups.

Statistical districts and regions
Malta is divided into six districts for statistical purposes, as defined by the National Statistics Office and Eurostat. Each district includes a number of local councils (LAU2). At the NUTS-3 level, these districts are grouped into two regions: Malta (with the first five districts) and Gozo and Comino (with the sixth district).
Historically, the statistical districts were sometimes grouped into three larger statistical regions: Malta Majjistral, Malta Xlokk, and Gozo and Comino. This older classification is no longer used officially.
Southern Harbour District
The Southern Harbour District is part of Malta Xlokk. It includes 14 local councils, such as the suburbs of the capital Valletta and cities like Birgu, Cospicua, Senglea, and Żabbar. The largest town is Żabbar, and the smallest is Xgħajra.
Northern Harbour District
The Northern Harbour District is part of the Central Region. It includes 13 local councils, with Birkirkara being the largest and Ta' Xbiex the smallest.
South Eastern District
The South Eastern District is part of Malta Xlokk. It includes 11 local councils, with Marsaskala as the largest and Ħal Safi as the smallest.
Western District
The Western District is part of Malta Majjistral. It includes 10 local councils, with Żebbuġ as the largest and Mdina as the smallest.
Northern District
The Northern District is part of the Northern Region. It includes 6 local councils, with St. Paul's Bay as the largest and Għargħur as the smallest.
Gozo and Comino District
The Gozo and Comino District is also the Gozo Region. It includes 14 local councils, with Victoria (or Rabat) as the largest and Għasri as the smallest.

Police districts
Malta is divided into two police regions, each managed by an Assistant Commissioner. These regions are further split into twelve police districts in total. Each district has its own superintendent and a police headquarters.
The first region includes districts covering areas such as Valletta, Ħamrun, Paola, Bormla, Iż-Żejtun, and Qormi. The second region covers districts including Sliema, San Ġiljan, Birkirkara, Mosta, San Pawl il-Baħar, and parts of Gozo. Each district lists specific towns and streets where police stations are located, along with the headquarters city for that district.
