East Quantoxhead

East Quantoxhead is a small village in England. It is found in the beautiful Quantock Hills, which are known for their natural beauty. The village is close to other places like West Quantoxhead, Williton, and Bridgwater. Being part of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty means that the area around East Quantoxhead is special and well-kept, making it a nice place to visit or live.
History
East Quantoxhead has a long history. Near the village, there is an old fort from the Iron Age and signs of burials from the Bronze Age. The village has interesting old buildings like a manor house with a medieval tower, thatched cottages, and a medieval barn.
In the past, the village had a small harbour used for bringing in limestone and exporting alabaster. There were also places where copper was mined long ago.
Governance
The parish council helps take care of local matters in East Quantoxhead. It decides how to spend money for local needs, checks plans for building or changing things in the area, and works with police and safety groups to keep the community safe. The council also starts projects to fix and improve local facilities and talks with bigger government groups about roads, paths, and public transport.
For bigger government matters, East Quantoxhead is now part of the Somerset Council since April 1, 2023. Before that, it belonged to different local groups. The village is also part of the Tiverton and Minehead area that picks a member of parliament to represent them in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
Religious sites
The village has a church named after St Mary, with some parts that are very old, going back to the 1300s. On the south wall of the church, there is a special sundial that shows the time. The church also has a wooden speaking platform that was made in 1633. This important church is protected and recognized by English Heritage as a special Grade II* listed building.
Notable inhabitants
East Quantoxhead is where Sarah Biffen was born. She was a painter who lived in the time of Queen Victoria. Sarah was special because she was born without arms and was very short, about 37 inches tall.
The village was also home to Walter Luttrell, a landowner who served in World War II. He gave Dunster Castle to the National Trust and was made the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset.
