Economy of Dubai
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The economy of Dubai is very big and important. In 2023, its total value of goods and services was about 429 billion AED, which is around $116 billion USD. Over the past few decades, Dubai has changed a lot. Today, more than 90% of the people living there are from other countries.
Dubai used to rely heavily on oil, but now oil makes up less than 1% of its economy. Instead, important parts of Dubai’s economy today include selling goods in stores, moving goods around the world, banking, making things, building homes and offices, and attracting visitors from all over. Dubai is also a key place for trading gold and has been an important stop for ships and traders for many years.
The city has built many hotels and big buildings to attract tourists. It also has a huge port called Jebel Ali and a major airline called Emirates. Dubai has special areas called free zones to help businesses grow. Even though Dubai faced serious money problems during the 2008 financial crisis, it has continued to develop and remain a very important place for business and trade around the world.
Corporations
In early 2015, Dubai saw a 12.5% increase in new companies. During that time, 9,317 new firms registered, bringing the total number of registered companies in Dubai to 106,000.
From January to August 2017, Dubai issued licenses for 249,000 businesses. This made up 46.8% of all the licenses issued across the UAE during that time.
Main economic drivers
Travel and tourism
Main article: Tourism in Dubai
Tourism is very important for Dubai's economy. The government plans to keep bringing in money from visitors all over the world. In 2017, tourism added about $41 billion to Dubai's total money made, which was 4.6% of all the money the city made. It also gave jobs to around 570,000 people, which was 4.8% of all jobs.
In 2016, Dubai International Airport had 83.6 million passengers. That same year, 14.9 million visitors stayed in Dubai hotels, which was 5% more than in 2015.
Since a peace agreement was signed in 2020, over 50,000 people from a certain country visited Dubai. Direct flights between their city and Dubai started even during a health crisis, and they did not need to stay home after visiting.
Real estate and property
Main article: Developments in Dubai
Dubai changed from relying on oil to focusing more on services and tourism. This led to big building projects starting around 2004. Large projects like Palm Islands, The World, Dubai Marina, Burj Khalifa, Dubai Waterfront, Business Bay, Dubailand, and Jumeirah Village helped make Dubai grow quickly.
Dubai has many tall buildings, like the Emirates Towers and the Burj-al-Arab hotel. The tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa, was built by Emaar Properties. It is 828 meters tall with 163 floors. Next to it is the Dubai Mall, one of the biggest shopping places in the world.
New big projects keep coming, like Business Bay, a new business area with 500 tall buildings around an artificial part of Dubai Creek. Dubai Waterfront will be very big, about seven times the size of Manhattan, with canals, islands, hotels, and homes along 800 kilometers of new coastline. Dubai Science Park is for companies working in medicine, research, and protecting health.
One plan was to build a special rotating skyscraper in Dubailand that would turn once a week. The International Media Production Zone started in 2003 to bring together printing, publishing, and media companies. Bawadi, a huge project planned in 2006, would add many new hotel rooms to Dubai.
Some people from other countries brought a lot of money to Dubai to buy homes. In the early 2000s, people from a certain country invested up to $200 billion. Trade between Dubai and that country grew three times from 2005 to 2009.
Dubai’s property market grew a lot in the mid-2000s but dropped in 2008. By 2012, it started to grow again. In 2013, prices went up fast, so the government made rules to prevent prices from getting too high again. In 2018, a company worked with a big real estate website in China to attract more buyers.
Because of a health crisis in 2020, property prices and demand dropped. But by the end of 2022, property sales hit a new record high. Many people from a certain country invested in Dubai to keep their money safe. Property prices went up a lot after 2020, making it harder for some people to buy homes.
Transport
The transport sector helps Dubai's economy grow. In 2017, it was worth $12.5 billion, which was 11.2% of Dubai's economy. By 2018, it had grown to $48.8 billion, making up 12.3% of all the money Dubai made.
Construction
Main article: Developments in Dubai
Since 2000, Dubai has been building new areas, especially around Mina Seyahi near Jebel Ali. In 2002, laws changed so people who are not from the UAE could buy property but not land. Companies like Nakheel Properties, Emaar Properties, and Ellington Properties sell these properties. Rules about how much rent can go up each year were made, but laws are still changing as this market grows.
Property prices in Dubai fell since 2014 by more than 25%. The Creek Tower started building but isn’t finished yet, and some developers are waiting to pay their suppliers. Experts think prices will keep falling in 2019. Even with slower growth, building for Expo 2020 cost about AED38 billion ($10.3 billion).
Information and communication technology
The technology sector made up 4.1% of Dubai's total money in 2018.
Diamonds
Main article: Developments in Dubai
Dubai is one of the world's biggest places for buying and selling diamonds, just like Antwerp. In 2010, Dubai handled diamonds worth $35 billion, which is a big jump from just $3 million ten years before. In the first half of 2011, the value went up to $25.3 billion, a 55% increase from the same time in 2010.
Dubai has grown to become the third largest diamond trading center in the world. Diamond trade started from almost nothing in the early 2000s but reached nearly $35 billion in 2013 and 2014. Dubai's location between places where diamonds are mined in Africa and places where they are cut in India and China helps a lot. Many people think of Dubai as a great place to buy diamond jewelry because there are many jewelry shops and no taxes on buying. In 2011, customs duties were just 1%, helping the UAE compete with older diamond centers. In 2018, the UAE reduced a tax for diamond traders.
Diamond trading in Dubai happens at a special place managed by the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre. Many diamond companies have offices in the Almas Tower in the JLT business area. This place has offices for checking diamonds and safe transportation services, along with rooms for meetings. The DMCC is home to over a thousand companies that work with precious stones.
In September 2019, the Dubai Multi Commodities Center opened the world's biggest trading floor with 41 secure tables and strong security at the Dubai Diamond Exchange (DDE) in the Almas Tower.
Gold

Gold trade grew in the 1940s because of Dubai's free trade rules. Entrepreneurs from India and Iran opened shops in the Dubai Gold Souk. Even when the world gold market was slow, Dubai's gold and diamond trade grew from 18% in 2003 to 24% in 2004. In 2003, Dubai's gold trade was about Dh. 21 billion (US$5.8 billion). India buys the most gold from Dubai, and Switzerland supplies a lot of gold to Dubai.
By 2014, Dubai was a big player in world gold trade, competing with Shanghai and London. In 2026, flights to and from Dubai stopped because of problems in the Middle East, which made it hard to move gold and caused big changes in gold prices in places like India.
Industry and manufacturing
Dubai has important industries, including making energy through DEWA, which mainly provides water and power for the city. The aluminum industry is strong here, with Emirates Global Aluminum making 2.4 million tonnes of aluminum each year. There have also been efforts to start a car industry with Zarooq Motors, though cars have not yet been made. Dubai Ports shows how Dubai has grown industrially.
Foreign investment
In 2002, Dubai let foreigners own real estate. A global real estate firm named Dubai, along with Dublin and Las Vegas, as one of the best places for property markets.
In June 2021, Dubai changed its rules so that foreign investors no longer needed Emirati partners to start businesses. This change helped Dubai's economy grow after the COVID-19 recession. Investors quickly used this new rule.
COVID-19 impact
The COVID-19 pandemic caused big changes for Dubai's economy. Many important parts of the city's work, like tourism and travel, lost money for several years.
Expo 2020, a big event that was supposed to bring millions of visitors to Dubai and help the economy, had to be delayed until October 1, 2021 because of the pandemic and travel rules.
