A photograph of the national flag of Oman, symbolizing the country's heritage and identity.

The national flag of Oman (Arabic: علم عُمان) is a symbol of the country and its identity. It has two horizontal stripes, with white on the top and green on the bottom. Between these stripes is a red shape that looks like the letter “T.” Inside this red shape is the national emblem of Oman, which shows crossed swords over a khanjar, a traditional curved dagger. This design represents the strength, heritage, and culture of Oman. Flags like this help people feel proud of where they come from and show respect for their nation.

Design

The flag of Oman has two horizontal stripes. The top stripe is white, and the bottom stripe is green. Between them is a red shape that looks like a letter "T". Inside this red shape is a picture of the country’s symbol, which shows two crossed swords with a curved dagger placed over them. This design has special meanings. The white color stands for peace and for an important religious leader called the Imam. The green color reminds people of the Green Mountains in the north. The red color is used on many flags in the area around the Gulf. The symbol with the swords and dagger is a traditional design that has been used for a long time. It also includes a decorative horsebit that connects the weapons to the culture of Oman.

History

Oman used a plain red flag until 1970. After Sultan Qaboos bin Said took control in the 1970 coup, a new flag was created. This new flag added white and green stripes and placed the emblem of the Al Bu Said dynasty in the top left corner.

The flag's design was adjusted a few times. In 1995, its shape changed from a 3:4 ratio to 1:2. Then, in 2004, the ratio was changed again to 4:7.
