Use
The flag of Saudi Arabia is very special because it carries a holy message, so people do not usually put it on things like T-shirts. When there was a plan to put all country flags, including Saudi Arabia's, on footballs for a big sports event, Saudi leaders said this was not right and protested.
The flag is never lowered lower as a sign of sadness because that would be seen as disrespectful. Some other countries also never lower their flags this way. Usually, the flag is shown in a certain way, and there are special versions for different uses, but this is not common in Saudi Arabia.
History
The areas that became Saudi Arabia, like Nejd and Hejaz, had their own flags long ago. Leaders such as the Rashiduns, Umayyads, and Abbasids used different colors and symbols on their flags. Later, the Ottomans controlled Hejaz until the Arab Revolt.
The leaders of Saudi Arabia, the Al Saud, worked closely with Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. Since the 1700s, they used a special phrase on their flags. In 1921, a sword was added to the flag. Over time, the flag changed a little but kept the same basic look. The current official design was set on 15 March 1973.
Royal Standard
The Royal Standard is a green flag with white writing and a white sword. It also has a gold emblem in the bottom right corner.
The writing on the flag is in a special style called Thuluth script. It says, "There is no god but God; Muhammad is the Messenger of God." This is known as the shahada, which is an important statement of faith in Islam.
