Fomboni is a city in the Comoros with about 19,000 people. It is the fifth-largest city in the country and the capital of the Autonomous Island of Mohéli. Fomboni is a quiet place with an old market and a jetty.

The city is important because the 2001 Comorian Constitution, known as the "Fomboni Accords," was named after it. Fomboni is more than one third of the island’s population, making it a key part of Mohéli.

Infrastructure

Most buildings in Fomboni are small and have only one floor. About two kilometers to the east is the only airport on Mohéli Island, Mohéli Bandar Es Eslam Airport, which is in a nearby village called Djoezi. Along the main road, you can find a post office, banks, a hospital, and a market.

Culture

Fomboni has a football club called Fomboni FC. There is also a school run by the Alliance française in the city.

Climate

Fomboni has a tropical marine climate, which means it is usually warm and wet. The hotter, rainier part of the year runs from November to April, but temperatures don’t change much the rest of the year, staying between about 19 °C and 32 °C. Fomboni can sometimes face strong tropical storms that travel through the Mozambique Channel. The city gets around 2000 mm of rain each year.

Notable people

Fomboni has been home to some important people throughout history. Salima Machamba was the last ruler, or Sultana, of Moheli before French rule began. Other notable figures from Fomboni include Djoumbe Fatima, another Sultana, and Abderremane, who was also a Sultan of Mohéli. The city has also produced footballers such as Malaga Soulaimana, Salimo Velonjara, and Faouz Faidine Attoumane.

Transport

Fomboni has an airport called Mohéli Bandar Es Eslam Airport. It is about 3 km away in the town of Djoezi.
