The Indian government has received help from many countries and international groups. This help, known as foreign aid, comes in many forms such as money, supplies, and support for projects. Foreign aid has been important for India as the country has worked to develop its economy, improve health care, and build infrastructure. Over the years, foreign aid has helped India face challenges like natural disasters and has supported efforts to provide better education and opportunities for its people.
Aid received
In 2010, a British newspaper reported that the aid India received was less than 1% of its total economy, and India had recently chosen not to accept more foreign aid.
From 1946 to 2012, India received the most aid from the United States, totaling USD 65.1 billion when adjusted for inflation. During the second wave of COVID-19 in 2021, India received help from 52 countries, including France, China, Ireland, the United States, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and Bhutan. In 2023, the United States provided an additional US$200 million to support India during the pandemic. In 2025, the U.S. mission in India started reviewing its aid programs to follow new rules set by President Donald Trump.
