Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport is a special kind of airport called a general aviation airport. It is located in the city of Fort Lauderdale, in Broward County, Florida, United States. This airport is about five miles north of downtown Fort Lauderdale.

The airport has the IATA code FXE, the ICAO code KFXE, and the FAA LID code FXE. It is managed by the Transportation and Mobility Department of the City of Fort Lauderdale. Unlike big airports where commercial airplanes take off and land, Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport is used mainly for smaller private planes and other general aviation activities.

Overview

Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport was built in 1941 to help train Naval Aviators during World War II. It was originally called West Prospect Satellite Field. In 1947, the federal government gave the airport to the city of Fort Lauderdale to be used as a public airport.

Today, the airport handles over 150,000 airplane takeoffs and landings each year, making it one of the busiest places for private planes in the United States. It helps ease traffic at the larger Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The airport also has special services for international flights and safety crews that work all day and night. It is home to two rare animals that live in Florida: the gopher tortoise and the burrowing owl.

Facilities and aircraft

Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport is a big place that covers 1,050 acres. It has two long, paved runways for airplanes to take off and land. The airport is a great spot for learning to fly because it has an air traffic control tower that works all day and night.

During one year, the airport had many airplane takeoffs and landings—about 490 each day. Most of these flights were small private planes, with a few being bigger jets or helicopters. There are 909 airplanes that call this airport home.
