Fort Wadsworth Light

A historic lighthouse standing tall by the water, a safe and interesting sight for young explorers.

Fort Wadsworth Light is a lighthouse built in 1903 on Staten Island in New York Harbor. It stands on top of Battery Weed and helps light up the Narrows, the main entrance to the harbor. The lighthouse sits right under the Verrazzano–Narrows Bridge, making it an important landmark in the area.

Originally, the light could be seen for 14 nautical miles. It might have been moved from another nearby lighthouse called Fort Tompkins Light when it was built. In 1965, when the Verrazzano–Narrows Bridge opened, the lighthouse was no longer needed for guiding ships.

For many years after that, the light stayed dark. But in 2005, volunteers worked together to fix it up and give it new solar power so it could shine again. This helped bring the old lighthouse back to life as part of Gateway National Recreation Area.
