Gabe Jennings (born January 25, 1979, in Forks of Salmon, California) is an American Olympian and semi-retired middle-distance runner. During his time at Madison East High School in Madison, Wisconsin, Jennings achieved great success, winning nine state titles in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA). As of 2022, he still holds the record for the 1600 meter race in the WIAA Division 1 with a time of 4:04.97, set in 1997.
Jennings continued his athletic career at Stanford University, where he was recognized as an All-America athlete ten times and became an NCAA champion four times. His hard work and dedication led him to qualify for the 2000 Summer Olympics while he was still a college junior. Although he was eliminated during the semi-finals, his achievement of reaching the Olympics remains a notable part of his career.
Early life and education
Gabe Jennings was born on January 25, 1979, in Forks of Salmon, California, to two teachers. He started running at age 5 and ran two miles to and from school each day. When he was 13, his family moved to Madison, Wisconsin so his father could study at the University of Wisconsin. He went to Madison East High School, where he ran cross country and played football before focusing on running.
Jennings first studied math at Stanford University but later switched to music. He played several instruments, including the piano, drums, harpsichord, didgeridoo, and berimbau. He was known for playing music with fans after his races. Some people thought he acted in a free and relaxed way, but he didn’t agree with that description.
Running career
Gabe Jennings began running in high school, where he won many races and set records. He was named the top young athlete in the country twice.
Later, he ran for Stanford University. Though he faced some injuries, he still won several big races and helped his team do well. He qualified for the Olympic team and later continued running, even after taking a break to recover from health problems.
Post-running life
Gabe Jennings finished his studies at the University of Oregon School of Law in 2012. He then went to the Ocean University of China to learn more about environmental law for his LL.M.. After teaching in China for several years, he came back to the United States in 2019.
