Garissa massacre

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

The Garissa massacre or Bulla karatasi massacre was a sad event in 1980 in Garissa District of the North Eastern Province, Kenya. It happened when a local man named Abdi Madobe set fire to a Kenya Defence Forces camp, which led to the deaths of some soldiers.

In response, Kenyan government forces gathered many local people, mostly ethnic Somalis, at Garissa Primary School's football field. They were kept there for three days without water or food, which caused many to pass away. Only people who were not Somali were allowed to leave safely.

The government of Somalia, led at the time by the Supreme Revolutionary Council, stepped in and warned Kenya to stop such actions. This led to the Kenyan government ending the curfew and releasing everyone who had been detained.
