Gigi Fernández

Beatriz "Gigi" Fernández, born on February 22, 1964, is a former professional tennis player from Puerto Rico. She became well known for her amazing skills in doubles tennis, winning 17 major titles and two Olympic gold medals while playing for the United States. At one point, she was ranked as the world's best doubles player.
In addition to her doubles success, Gigi also played singles and reached a highest ranking of world No. 17 in 1991. She continued to play professionally until 1997, when she was 33 years old.
After retiring from competition, Gigi started a new career as a tennis coach, business owner, and someone who helps others. She created a special training program called The Gigi Method to teach people how to play doubles tennis better. Gigi also started an organization called Tennis for Hope to support people in the tennis world who face problems from natural disasters, after her own home was damaged by Hurricane Helene.
Gigi Fernández made history as the first person from Puerto Rico to be honored by the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Through her coaching, programs, and charitable work, she continues to inspire many people who love tennis.
Career
Gigi Fernández was known mainly for her skill in doubles tennis. She won 17 major doubles titles, including six at the French Open, five at the US Open, four at Wimbledon, and two at the Australian Open. She achieved this impressive feat every year from 1988 to 1997, except in 1989. She often played with Natasha Zvereva, and together they formed one of the most successful pairs in tennis history.
Fernández also won two Olympic gold medals in women’s doubles, teaming up with Mary Joe Fernández for both the Barcelona and Atlanta Games. Earlier in her career, she won a bronze medal for Puerto Rico at the Pan Am Games in 1979 and a gold medal in doubles at the Central American-Caribbean Games in 1982. She reached the world No. 1 ranking in doubles several times between 1991 and 1995. Fernández retired in 1997 and was later honored as Puerto Rico’s “Female Athlete of the Century.” In 2010, she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame alongside Zvereva.
Personal life
Beatriz "Gigi" Fernández grew up in Puerto Rico. Her parents were Tuto Fernández, a well-known doctor, and Beatriz Fernández. She began playing tennis when she was seven and studied at Academia San José in Guaynabo. In 1983, she became Puerto Rico's first female professional athlete.
After retiring from tennis, Fernández became a coach. She has helped many top players, including Rennae Stubbs, Lisa Raymond, and Samantha Stosur. She also coached the Puerto Rican national team and the University of South Florida. Fernández earned a degree in psychology and later a Master of Business Administration.
Today, she lives in Tampa, Florida and has twins named Karson Xavier and Madison Jane. She partners with retired golfer Jane Geddes. Fernández also serves on the board of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. After her house flooded during Hurricane Helene in January 2025, she started a foundation called Tennis for Hope to help people in the tennis community affected by natural disasters.
