History

Ancient Kalinga era

Gopalpur has an old sea port that was very important during the time of the maritime Kalinga region. Many travelers used this port to begin their journeys to Southeast Asia.

Post-Medieval era

Under the Soraine family, Gopalpur grew from a small fishing village into a busy trading port. The family built a lighthouse, the Albert Hotel, and helped create a fishing industry and trade routes with Burma.

Gopalpur was once a place where the Dutch had some influence. During British rule, many properties ended up with British missionaries due to family disagreements. The Albert Hotel, now unused, is a reminder of that time.

During the days of the British East India Company, large warehouses and godowns were built because trade with Burma, especially for rice from Rangoon, became very important.

Today, Gopalpur is a peaceful beach town, known for its charm and beauty. Only a few families from European and Anglo-Indian backgrounds still live there.

Beach

Gopalpur is a small town just 16 km from Brahmapur, a busy place in southern Odisha. It lies close to where Odisha meets Andhra Pradesh, right by the Bay of Bengal. The beach there has coconut trees, special trees called casuarinas, and soft sand hills that stretch for miles.

In the 1970s, the government of Odisha fixed up old wooden platforms called jetties, hoping they would help bring back trading at Gopalpur’s port. An old jetty there still draws visitors because it was once very important for trade many years ago. Sailors long ago started trips from this jetty to places like Indonesia and Rangoon across the sea. When a new jetty is finished, it may become a key port for southern Odisha again. From the beach, you can see a big, blue part of the sea and the far horizon. There are also long rows of cashew trees, and the town processes and sends out cashew nuts. A famous landmark is the town’s lighthouse, and the view from the top shows all of Gopalpur. The town holds a beach festival each year. Nearby is another beach called Dhabaleshwar, which has a temple. People in Gopalpur speak Odia and English.
