The Government of Sacramento operates as a charter city under the Charter of the City of Sacramento. This means it has its own special rules instead of following general state rules. The government is made up of the Sacramento City Council with 8 districts and the Mayor of Sacramento. They work together with a city manager to run the city.

Since 2024, the mayor has been Kevin McCarty. The current councilors are Lisa Kaplan, Roger Dickinson, Karina Talamantes, Phil Pluckebaum, Caity Maple, Eric Guerra, Rick Jennings II, and Mai Vang. Together, they make decisions to help Sacramento stay a great place to live.

Organization

The Mayor of Sacramento leads the city and is chosen by voters for a four-year term. The mayor works with the Sacramento City Council, which has eight members representing different areas of the city. Each council member serves for four years.

The city has several important groups that help it run smoothly. The Sacramento Police Department keeps the city safe, while the Sacramento Fire Department handles fire protection and emergency medical services. There is also a Community Development Department that takes care of building permits, property reviews, and planning for the city's future.

Law

The Charter of the City of Sacramento is the main rule book for how Sacramento is run. It gives all the power to make rules to the City Council. The Council uses this power to create the Sacramento City Code, which is a list of important rules and laws. If someone breaks these rules or doesn't do something they are supposed to, it can be considered a small crime, unless the rule says it is something even smaller.

The Sacramento County Superior Court covers the whole county and is part of the state's court system. In the past, the county owned and maintained the courthouses, which sometimes caused problems because the state's judges needed to ask the county for upgrades. Now, the state government controls the courthouses, so judges can manage them directly. The county still helps with security under an agreement with the state.
