The Great Train eXpress, known as GTX, is an exciting new way to travel in the busy Seoul Metropolitan Area. This special train network has three lines already being built, called GTX-A, GTX-B, and GTX-C. These trains will be faster than regular trains, making it easier for people to get around quickly.

Plans are also in place for three more lines in the future, named GTX-D, GTX-E, and GTX-F. All of these lines are expected to be finished by the year 2030. The GTX will help many people in the area travel more easily and comfortably.

GTX-A

The GTX-A, officially Metropolitan Area Rapid Transit Line A, is a faster commuter train line in Seoul, South Korea. It has two parts that are already open to the public.

The project began in 2018 but faced delays due to land issues and the discovery of old ruins from the Joseon period.

The line currently operates between Dongtan to Suseo and from Unjeongjungang to Seoul Station. Some stations like Suseo, Seongnam, and Dongtan began service on March 30, 2024, while others opened later in the year. The full connection between Seoul Station and Suseo is expected to be ready in August 2026. Samseong Station will open later, in 2028.

Trains on GTX-A can carry about 1,090 passengers each. The southern part of the line shares tracks with another train service called the SRT, while the northern part is mostly underground. Trains run several times an hour, with shorter wait times in the northern section.

GTX-B

Construction of GTX Line B started on March 7, 2024. The line is expected to be finished by the year 2030.

GTX-C

Construction of the GTX Line C began on January 25, 2024, and is expected to finish by 2028. After choosing the main builder for this line, two more stations might be added: Indeogwon Station and Wangsimni Station.

Additional plans for other lines

In 2021, plans for a Line D were shared, but many people did not agree with the route, so it has not been approved yet. The current government led by Yoon Suk-yeol has promised to build three more lines called Lines D, E, and F. The exact routes for these lines are still being decided, but Line D might be longer than the one first suggested. There are also plans for Lines G and H to reach more areas in the northern and southwestern parts of Gyeonggi Province.

Reception

Some people worry that the Great Train eXpress project might pull more people and businesses toward Seoul. They think this could make Seoul even more important and cause other smaller cities to struggle.
