The first Green Lantern was created by Martin Nodell and Bill Finger. He appeared in All-American Comics #16 in 1940. This Green Lantern was named Alan Scott, a railroad engineer who found a magic lantern after a train crash. The lantern gave him a magic ring that gave him many powers, but the ring needed to be charged every day and could not affect wood.
In 1959, a new version of Green Lantern was introduced named Hal Jordan. Unlike Alan Scott, Hal Jordan’s powers came from an alien who gave him a ring. Hal became part of the Green Lantern Corps, a team of space heroes.
The Green Lantern comic books have had many changes over the years. They have introduced new characters and stories, and sometimes the books were stopped and started again. The stories have also won many awards for their writing and art.

In academic and journalistic jargon
Some political experts and writers use the term "Green Lanternism" (or "political Green Lanternism") to talk about how people often expect political leaders to be perfect or all-powerful. They may blame leaders for problems that can't be solved, as if the leaders' abilities depended only on their own willpower, much like the powers of the Green Lantern heroes.
