The HWU transmitter is a special French facility used for sending messages to submarines underwater. It belongs to the French Navy and is located near the town of Rosnay. This transmitter is one of the biggest radio transmitters in France and can be seen in satellite images, even though it is usually blurred out.
It has many tall masts to send out its signals, with the tallest one reaching 357 meters high. Together with the masts at the Allouis longwave transmitter, these are some of the tallest structures in all of France.
The HWU transmitter sends out signals on certain frequencies, and these signals can be picked up in Europe using a computer sound card connected to a special coil and some software. However, understanding the messages requires knowing the special codes used for the communication.
