Hindu texts or Hindu scriptures are manuscripts and historical literature connected to the many traditions within Hinduism. These texts hold great importance for people who follow Hindu beliefs and practices.

Some of the major Hindu texts include the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Itihasa (which includes the Mahabharata and the Ramayana), and the Puranas. Scholars find it challenging to define exactly what counts as Hindu scriptures because Hinduism has so many different traditions. Still, many people include the Agamas as important Hindu texts. Others also consider writings like the Bhagavata Purana and the Yajnavalkya Smriti to be important parts of Hindu scriptures.

These texts share stories, teachings, and ideas that have shaped Hindu culture and spirituality for thousands of years. They continue to be read and studied by many today.

History

Hindu texts are old books and stories important to Hinduism. They are divided into two groups: Shruti and Smriti.

Shruti means "that which is heard." These are the oldest and most important Hindu texts. They include the four Vedas and their parts like the Upanishads. Many Hindus think the Upanishads are very special.

Smriti means "that which is remembered." These texts have authors and include many different kinds of stories and teachings. They include famous epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana, as well as the Puranas and other guides on life and culture.

Most of these ancient texts were first spoken and passed down by word of mouth for a very long time before being written down. They were often in Sanskrit but have been translated into many languages.

Shruti

The Shruti texts are special holy writings in Hinduism. They are called "that which is heard" because people believe ancient wise ones heard these words from God thousands of years ago. No one wrote them down—they were passed down by word of mouth. These texts are written in Sanskrit.

The Vedas are the main Shruti texts. There are four Vedas: the Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda, and Atharva Veda. They come from a very old time in northern India and are written in Vedic Sanskrit. Hindus believe the Vedas are eternal and not written by any person—they are like messages from the universe itself.

Each Veda has four parts: Samhitas (hymns and prayers), Aranyakas (guides on rituals and ceremonies), Brahmanas (explanations of the rituals), and Upanishads (teachings about life and the spirit). The Upanishads are very important because they explore big ideas like the soul and truth. There are many Upanishads, but ten are considered the main ones.

Historical significance

Hindu scriptures give us an early look at arts and sciences in India. They talk about music, dance, sculptures, architecture, astronomy, science, mathematics, medicine, and wellness. For example, the Ramayana, written by Valmiki between 500 BCE and 100 BCE, describes music and dancing. It mentions special dancers and musicians.

The oldest known writing about dance is found in the Natasutras. This text is talked about in the works of Panini, who lived around 500 BCE and wrote about the language Sanskrit. The Natasutras are thought to have been written around 600 BCE, but the full book has not survived to today.
