Homburg is a town in the state of Saarland, Germany. It is the third largest town in Saarland and had a population of 43,029 people in 2022. As the administrative center of the Saarpfalz district, Homburg plays an important role in the area.

The town provides more than 30,000 jobs, making it a significant workplace for the region. Well-known companies such as Robert Bosch GmbH, Schaeffler Group, and Michelin have major operations there.

Homburg is also home to the medical department of the University of Saarland and the Karlsberg beer brewery, adding to its importance in both education and local industry.

Geography

Homburg is found in the northern part of the Saarpfalz district and borders Rhineland-Palatinate. It is 16 km from Neunkirchen and 36 km from Saarbrücken.

The city districts are in the Blies valley or near its smaller streams Erbach, Lambsbach, and Schwarzbach. Homburg includes the main area and nine smaller districts: Beeden, Bruchhof-Sanddorf, Einöd, Erbach, Jägersburg, Kirrberg, Reiskirchen, Schwarzenbach, and Wörschweiler.

History

Homburg has a long and interesting history. It began as a village in the 12th century and became a town in 1330. Over the years, it has been part of many different regions and countries, including the County of Homburg, the Kingdom of France, the Kingdom of Bavaria, the German Empire, and finally modern Germany. Today, the old Hohenburg Castle, now in ruins, stands as a reminder of its past.
