House of Austria-Este

The House of Habsburg-Este, also known as the House of Austria-Este, is a branch of the larger House of Habsburg-Lorraine. This branch began in 1771 when Ferdinand of Habsburg-Lorraine married Maria Beatrice d'Este, the only daughter of the Duke of Modena, Ercole III d'Este. Because of this marriage, the family held the title of Archduke of Austria-Este.

After Ercole III d'Este passed away in 1803, the main ruling line of the Este family ended. The Habsburg-Este family then inherited the titles and lands of the Este family. Even though the male line of the Habsburg-Este ended in 1875, the family continued as a non-sovereign branch of the Habsburg-Lorraine family. Today, this branch of the family lives in Belgium and is known officially as Austria-Este.

History

The House of Austria-Este began in 1771 when Archduke Ferdinand Karl of the House of Austria married Maria Beatrice d'Este. This union created a new branch of the Habsburg-Lorraine family. Maria Beatrice was the only child of Ercole III, the Duke of Modena, and when Ercole III passed away in 1803, the Habsburg-Este family inherited the titles and lands of the Este family.

After the Napoleonic Wars, Maria Beatrice and her son Francis IV were restored to their positions as rulers of the Duchy of Massa and Principality of Carrara and the Duchy of Modena and Reggio. The family ruled these areas until 1859 when they were incorporated into the newly united Kingdom of Italy. The last ruler, Francis V, passed away in 1875, and his inheritance was left to Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, who took the name Austria-Este. The title continues today with Archduke Lorenz of Austria-Este and his family.
