Hypothalamus

The hypothalamus is a small but very important part of the vertebrate brain. It is about the size of an almond and is located below the thalamus. This area connects the nervous system to the endocrine system through the pituitary gland.
The hypothalamus helps control many important body functions. It manages things like body temperature, hunger, thirst, sleep, and the body's daily rhythms. It also plays a role in feelings of tiredness and in how we rest and wake up. This tiny part of the brain is key to keeping our bodies working properly.
Structure
The hypothalamus is a small part of the brain that helps connect the nervous system to the hormone system through a gland called the pituitary gland. It is found in all animals with a backbone. In mammals, special cells in the hypothalamus make important chemicals called hormones. These hormones are sent into the blood to help control many body functions.
The hypothalamus has different areas and zones where special groups of cells, called nuclei, are located. It connects to many other parts of the brain and nervous system, helping to control many body processes and behaviors.

Function
The hypothalamus is a small but important part of the brain. It helps connect the nervous system to the endocrine system through the pituitary gland. It sits below another part of the brain called the thalamus and is part of a system that helps control emotions.
Hormone release
The hypothalamus plays a big role in controlling hormones. It does this mainly by managing the anterior pituitary gland, which then controls many other glands and body parts. Special hormones made in the hypothalamus travel to either the median eminence or the posterior pituitary, where they are stored and released when needed.
In one system, called the hypothalamic–adenohypophyseal axis, hormones move from the hypothalamus to the anterior pituitary through special blood vessels. There, they help control the release of more hormones into the bloodstream.
Other hormones, like vasopressin and oxytocin, are also released from the median eminence. In another system, the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, hormones from the posterior pituitary enter the bloodstream directly.
Stimulation
The hypothalamus helps control many body rhythms and responses. It needs to respond to many different signals from both inside and outside the body. It reacts to light, smells, certain chemicals in the blood, and information from the heart and digestive system. It also responds to stress and the presence of germs, which can raise body temperature.
Control of food intake
A specific part of the hypothalamus helps control how much food we eat. When this area is active, it makes us want to eat more. If it is damaged, it can stop hunger completely or make someone eat too much and become obese.
There are different ideas about how this control works, such as signals from fat tissue, chemicals from the gut, or the brain’s use of sugar. Another idea is that body temperature can also affect hunger — feeling cold might make us hungrier, while feeling hot might reduce appetite.
Fear processing
The hypothalamus also helps control how we respond to danger. It plays a role in how animals react to predators or aggressive rivals. Certain parts of the hypothalamus become active during these scary situations, helping to coordinate defensive actions like freezing or trying to escape.
