International Transportation Service, LLC (ITS) was founded in 1971 and began its operations on Terminal Island while its permanent home on Pier J was being built. In the spring of 1972, ITS moved into its new 48-acre terminal on Pier J, starting a long partnership with the Port of Long Beach. From the beginning, ITS became an important part of the local business community and a leader in the maritime industry.

In 1986, ITS made history as the first terminal in Southern California to use on-dock double-stack rail, which helped improve efficiency in moving cargo. Over the years, ITS continued to grow and adapt, expanding its facilities and upgrading its systems to handle larger ships and more cargo. The company was recognized for its excellence, receiving awards such as the International Achievement Award in 1991 and handling three million containers by 1994.

ITS also focused on environmental leadership, signing the Port of Long Beach’s first “Green Lease” in 2006 and installing shore-side electrical power in 2008 to reduce emissions from ships. In 2020, ITS welcomed the largest vessel ever to visit the terminal, the ONE Aquila, showing its ability to handle very big ships. Most recently, in 2025, ITS started the South Slip Fill Project, which will add 19 acres of new land, bringing the total terminal size to 275 acres and supporting future growth and sustainability.
