Isaac Berger

Isaac "Ike" Berger (November 16, 1936 – June 4, 2022) was an American weightlifter who competed for the United States at the 1956, 1960, and 1964 Olympics. He won one gold medal and two silver medals, showing great strength and skill. Berger held eight world records and won the United States national title eight times, making him one of the best in his sport.

Born to a rabbi in Jerusalem, Berger moved to New York with his family when he was thirteen. He began weightlifting at Schaffer's Gym in Brooklyn around 1952. Berger also studied auto mechanics and trained to be a cantor in a synagogue. In his free time, he enjoyed playing sports like softball, basketball, and even boxing.

Berger was the first featherweight to lift more than 800 pounds and to press double his body weight. He won the world championships twice and also won at the Pan American Games. In 1957, at the 1957 Maccabiah Games, he set a world record and received his gold medal from Israel Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, who called him the "Mighty Jew." Berger’s achievements made him a celebrated figure in weightlifting.

Olympics

Isaac Berger was an amazing weightlifter who competed in three Olympics. He won a gold medal at the 1956 Melbourne Summer Olympics and set a world record with a lift of 352.5 kilograms. Four days before the 1960 Rome Summer Olympics, he broke four world records in different lifts. Even though he felt this was very hard on his body, he still won a silver medal. He also won another silver medal at the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics. Berger was known for being able to compete well against strong athletes from the Soviet Union in his weight class.

World championships

Isaac Berger was very good at weightlifting in the 60 kg class. He won medals almost every year from 1957 to 1964 in the World Championships. He got a bronze medal in 1957, a gold medal in 1958, a silver medal in 1959, another gold medal in 1961, and silver medals in 1963 and 1964.

He also did well in the Pan Am Games. He won gold medals in the 60 kg division at the 1959 Pan Am Games in São Paulo, Brazil, and at the 1963 Pan Am Games in Chicago.

Retirement

After finishing his weightlifting career in 1964, Isaac started a business selling exercise tools in New York. He created a popular weight-loss belt called Waste-a-Way in 1965. He also studied music and later worked in synagogues in Florida, Missouri, and New York. By 1970, he focused on selling weightlifting and exercise products through his company, Ike Berger Enterprises.

Honors

Isaac Berger was honored with a place in the United States Weightlifters Hall of Fame in 1965 and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1980. He passed away on June 4, 2022.
