Islandia, Florida

Islandia is a small area in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. It is found in the upper Florida Keys on islands like Elliott Key and Totten Key. Islandia was special because it was the only place in the Florida Keys that was not in Monroe County.

In 2010, there were only 18 people living there, and most of them worked for the National Park Service. Later, in 2011, leaders decided that Islandia would no longer be its own city. By March 2012, Islandia was officially closed down and is now just part of Miami-Dade County.

History

Islandia, especially Elliott Key, was originally used by the Native American Tequesta people for fishing. Later, it became a safe place for people whose ships had sunk. By the mid-1800s, Bahamians tried to grow food on the island, but it was very hard because the ground was made of coral rock. By the early 1900s, Islandia had its own school and over 100 people living there. But as time went on, fewer people stayed because there was no electricity, farming was difficult, and it was far from the mainland.

In 1960, some people who lived there decided to make Islandia an official city. They wanted to build big hotels, golf courses, and homes, and even started clearing land for a wide road. But many people, including fishermen and leaders, did not want this. They wanted the islands to be part of a national park. In 1968, most of the land was bought by the government and became part of Biscayne National Park. The road plan was stopped. By 2012, Islandia was no longer a city and became part of Miami-Dade County again.

Geography

Islandia is a small place found at 25°23′18″N 80°14′10″W / 25.38833°N 80.23611°W / 25.38833; -80.23611. It covers a big area of 66.4 square miles (172 km²), but most of it is water—about 59.9 square miles (155 km²). Only 6.4 square miles (17 km²) is land.

Islandia is near important places like Biscayne Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and Key Largo. These areas surround the islands where Islandia is located.
