Jacob Clay

Jacob Clay (January 18, 1882–December 31, 1955) was a well-known physicist from the Netherlands. He made an important discovery about cosmic rays, which are high-energy particles that come from space. Clay was the first to suggest and find evidence that these cosmic rays are made up of charged particles. His work helped scientists understand more about the universe and the tiny particles that travel through space.
Early life
Jacob Clay was born on January 18, 1882, in Berkhout. His parents were Pieter Claij and Neeltje Molenaar. He went to the Erasmiaans Gymnasium and later studied physics at the University of Leiden with teachers like Heike Kamerlingh Onnes and Hendrik Antoon Lorentz. He finished his studies in 1908 and married Tettje Clay-Jolles, and they had a son together.
Career
Jacob Clay taught in Leiden and at the Technische Hogeschool in Delft from 1906 to 1920. He then became a professor at the new Bandung Institute of Technology.
Clay worked with his wife Tettje Clay-Jolles and found that radiation in the air changes depending on how far you are from the equator. During a trip back to the Netherlands, he measured cosmic radiation and saw that it increased the further he traveled from the equator. This led him to suggest that cosmic rays are charged particles, not photons. His idea was widely accepted by 1932. He later became a professor at the University of Amsterdam and wrote over 200 papers before retiring in 1952.
Personal life
Jacob Clay met and fell in love with a fellow PhD student named Tettje Jolles, and they married in 1908. They had three children together. In 1920, the family moved to Bandung in Java, where Jacob Clay became a professor of physics at the Institute of Technology.
