James Richardson Logan was born on April 10, 1819, in Berwickshire, Scotland. He was a lawyer who played an important role in naming the region now known as Indonesia. The name was first created by an English ethnologist, George Windsor Earl, and Logan helped make it well-known.

In 1847, while living in Singapore, Logan started a scholarly magazine called The Journal of the Indian Archipelago and Eastern Asia. He edited and wrote for this journal until 1862. Logan also worked as an editor for the Penang Gazette.

Logan passed away on October 20, 1869, in Penang, Straits Settlements. He is buried at the Old Protestant Cemetery in George Town, Malaysia. Today, there is a marble statue of him in the Penang High Court building, and a road named Logan Road honors his memory.
