Jawaharlal Nehru Port

Jawaharlal Nehru Port, also called JNPT and Nhava Sheva Port, is a big container port in India. It is run by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust Authority and sits on the eastern side of the Arabian Sea in Navi Mumbai, in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. You can reach the port through Uran, an important city in Navi Mumbai. This port serves as the main port for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, as well as for all of Maharashtra and Western India. Its name comes from the villages of Nhava and Sheva that are located there. It is also where the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor ends.

As of January 2023, the port is getting better with help from a loan agreement between the Asian Development Bank and Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal Private Limited. The loan of $131 million will be used to improve the terminal, handle more containers, update existing spots for ships, and add equipment that uses less energy. These improvements aim to welcome more ships and make international trade easier, clearer, and better for the environment.

History

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port opened on 26 May 1989. It became India's second largest container port and handled over 4 million TEUs (Twenty-foot equivalent units) between 2016 and 2021.

The port has its own customs house, 30 container stations, and connections to 52 depots around the country. Projects like the Dedicated Freight Corridor will help more trains reach the port, improving its connections by rail and road. Being close to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Pune helps the port serve shippers quickly.

In 2006, the port began using special tags on containers to track goods. The port works with many companies and government agencies to make shipping easier in India.

Nhava Sheva Freeport container terminal

The JNPT Container Terminal was run by the port trust. It has a quay that is 680 metres long with 3 spots for ships.

In 2023, a new company started running the terminal and plans to make it handle 1.8 million TEUs by 2025.

Nhava Sheva International container terminal

The Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal was leased to a group led by P&O, part of DP World. It opened in July 2000 and has a quay that is 600 metres long with two spots for ships. It was meant to handle up to 62.15 million tonnes of cargo. This was India's first private container terminal.

GTI-APM container terminal

In 2006, a third container terminal began operating, run by APM Terminals. It could handle 1.3 million TEUs.

Bharat Mumbai container terminal

The fourth container terminal, called Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal, was built and run by PSA International. The first part, able to handle 2.4 million TEUs, finished in December 2017. The whole terminal will handle up to 4.8 million TEUs each year when the second part is done.

Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway container terminal

A new terminal called NSIGT opened in July 2016. It has a quay that is 330 metres long and can handle 0.8 million TEUs.

Traffic

Jawaharlal Nehru Port sends out things like textiles, sporting goods, and chemicals. It brings in items such as machinery, plastics, and metals. Most of the goods come from or go to Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, and North India.
