Jet aircraft

Jet aircraft, often called jets, are planes that use special engines called jet engines to fly. These engines push air backward very fast, which helps the plane move forward quickly. Most jets have fixed wings and are used for both civilian travel, like airlines, and military purposes.
Jets usually fly very fast, often close to the speed of sound. They typically travel at about Mach 0.8, which is around 981 kilometers per hour (610 miles per hour). They also fly high in the sky, usually between 10,000 and 15,000 meters (33,000 to 49,000 feet), where their engines work best. This is different from older planes with propellers, which fly more slowly and at lower heights.
The design of jets follows a rule called the Whitcomb area rule. This rule helps make the plane’s shape smooth so it can cut through the air better and save energy. Two inventors, Frank Whittle, an English man, and Hans von Ohain from Germany, worked separately to create the first jet engines. In 1939, the world’s first jet plane, the Heinkel He 178, flew for the first time, marking an important moment in aviation history.
History
After the first powered aircraft flew, many people came up with ideas for jet designs. During the 1920s and 1930s, different types of jet-like aircraft were designed, such as motorjets, turboprops, pulsejets, and rocket-powered planes.
In 1928, the Lippisch Ente became the first aircraft to fly using rocket power. A year later, in 1929, the Opel RAK.1 became the first plane built just for rocket flight.
The turbojet engine was developed separately by Frank Whittle and Hans von Ohain in the 1930s. The first turbojet aircraft to fly was the Heinkel He 178 on August 27, 1939 in Rostock, Germany. However, the engine didn’t last long because of problems with the metal getting too hot.
The first jet plane to get a lot of attention was the Italian Caproni Campini N.1 motorjet, which flew on August 27, 1940. This plane used a piston engine to power its turbine, not just the turbine’s own combustion.
The British experimental Gloster E.28/39 had its first flight on May 15, 1941, using Frank Whittle’s turbojet. In the United States, the Bell XP-59A flew on October 1, 1942, using a version of Whittle’s engine made by General Electric.
The Gloster Meteor was the first jet plane made for regular use. Its prototype first flew on March 5, 1943, and the first production model flew on January 12, 1944.
Types of jet aircraft
Military jet aircraft
The Messerschmitt Me 262 was the first jet fighter to be used in battle, starting in 1944. About 1,400 of these planes were made, and some fought in World War II. Another early jet was the UK's Meteor, which helped protect the country. Germany also made jet planes like the Arado Ar 234 and the Heinkel He 162. The USSR tested a jet called the Bereznyak-Isayev BI-1, but it was stopped before it could be used much. Japan made a jet called the Nakajima J9Y Kikka in 1945. The United States introduced its first jet fighter, the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star, in 1945, and the UK followed with the de Havilland Vampire. In 1950, during the Korean War, a U.S. pilot shot down two enemy jets in the first jet-to-jet fight. The fastest military jet was the SR-71 Blackbird, which could fly very fast.
Commercial jet aircraft
The first commercial jet service began in 1952, flown by BOAC from London to Johannesburg using the de Havilland Comet. The Comet was faster and quieter than older planes, but it had problems that caused crashes. Because of this, the Boeing 707 became popular in 1958. The 707 looked like many planes we see today, with engines under the wings. More fuel-efficient jet planes, called turbofan planes, started to appear in the 1950s and 1960s. The fastest commercial jet was the Tu-144, which could fly very fast, but it stopped being used not long after it started. The Concorde was another very fast plane that flew for many years.
Other
Some vehicles that use jet power are not typical airplanes. For example, cruise missiles are unmanned jets that can fly on their own. There are also special planes like the unmanned X-43, which can fly extremely fast, and the X-15, a rocket plane that can fly very fast too. Some helicopters have been made with jet engines to help them fly faster, and there are even special wingsuits with small jet engines that can fly for short times.

Jet engines work by pushing out hot gas to move the aircraft forward. There are several types of jet engines, each with its own purpose.
Turbojets are best for flying faster than the speed of sound, but they are not very efficient for slower speeds. Turbofans are more efficient and are used in many airplanes, especially those that fly just below the speed of sound.
Propulsive efficiency

In jet aircraft, propulsive efficiency is how well the energy from the engine turns into movement. It is always less than 100% because some energy is lost to air resistance and the way the engine works. This efficiency depends on how dense the air is and how fast the aircraft is flying.
For jet aircraft, the best efficiency happens when the speed of the exhaust matches the speed of the plane. This balance helps the aircraft move most effectively.
Range

For a jet that flies high up in the sky, the speed of sound stays the same. This means that if the jet keeps flying at the same angle and speed, it will slowly climb higher without changing how fast it’s really going. This idea helps figure out how far a jet can travel. The formula for this is called the Breguet range equation, named after a French aviation pioneer, Louis Charles Breguet.
