Karl Friedrich Schimper

Karl Friedrich Schimper was a German botanist, naturalist, and poet who lived from February 15, 1803, to December 21, 1867. He loved studying plants and the natural world, which helped him become an important scientist in his time.

As a botanist, Schimper studied how plants grow and change over time. His work added to our understanding of many plant species and their roles in nature.

Life

Karl Friedrich Schimper was born on February 15, 1803, in Mannheim. He studied theology at Heidelberg University and later taught at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München.

Schimper made important discoveries about how plants grow and develop. He is especially famous for creating the idea of prehistoric hot and cold periods and helping develop the modern understanding of ice ages and climate changes. His brother Georg Wilhelm Schimper and cousin Wilhelm Philippe Schimper were also botanists. Even though Schimper did not write his ideas down, he shared them with Louis Agassiz, who later became widely known for them. Schimper passed away on December 21, 1867, in Schwetzingen.

Works

Karl Friedrich Schimper wrote a book called Beschreibung des Symphytum Zeyheri und seiner zwei deutschen verwandten der S. bulbosum Schimper und S. tuberosum Jacq in 1835. It was published in Heidelberg by Winter and included six stone plates. You can find a digital version through the University and State Library Düsseldorf.

When scientists mention plants he discovered, they use the abbreviation K.F.Schimp. to show he was the author. This helps when they cite a botanical name.
