Kenya People's Union

The Kenya People's Union (KPU) was a socialist political party in Kenya. It was led by Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, a well-known leader who worked to support the people of Kenya. The party aimed to bring together ordinary people to fight for better rights and conditions. However, in 1969, the government banned the Kenya People's Union, ending its activities. This moment shows how leaders and groups sometimes face challenges when they try to make big changes in their country.
History
In March 1966, a group of people who wanted change left the main party in Kenya, called the Kenya African National Union (KANU), and started a new party called the Kenya People's Union (KPU). Many people joined this new party, especially in places where the Luo people lived. But the leaders of Kenya did not like this new party.
The government used many ways to make it hard for the KPU. They told employers not to hire people who supported the KPU, which led to many people losing their jobs. They also took away passports from KPU members to stop them from traveling.
After three years of trouble and many leaders being arrested, the KPU could not continue. On October 30, 1969, the government said the KPU was not allowed anymore, making Kenya a place where only one party could exist.
