Kevin Thompson (politician)

Kevin Thompson is an American politician who used to serve in the United States Air Force. Today, he is a member of the Arizona Corporation Commission. He belongs to the Republican Party.

Before joining the Commission, Thompson worked for the people of Mesa, AZ. He was a Councilmember for District 6 from January 2015 until January 2023. In November 2022, the citizens of Arizona chose him to be part of the Commission, and he started this new job after that.

Personal life and education

Kevin Thompson was born in West Monroe, Louisiana and moved to Dallas, Texas when he was a year old. He grew up in Euless, Texas. At 19, he joined the United States Air Force. After training in San Antonio, Texas and Aurora, Colorado, he served for eight years, including a mission during Operation Desert Storm. He left the Air Force in 1996 with an Honorable Discharge.

Thompson later earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He worked for Southwest Gas for many years before being elected to the Mesa City Council in 2015. He has served on many community boards and is now a commissioner. He and his wife, Donna, have two children.

Military Service

Kevin Thompson joined the United States Air Force in 1987 and began his training in San Antonio, TX the next year. He became skilled in aircraft weapons and was sent to train on the General Dynamics F-111 in Aurora, CO. After finishing training, he was stationed at RAF Upper Heyford in Oxfordshire, England with the 79th Tactical Fighter Squadron.

During his time there, Thompson was sent to support important operations in Southwest Asia in 1990. His unit helped protect the area during a big conflict. He returned to England in 1991 and received several awards for his brave service.

Later, Thompson moved to Nellis AFB in Las Vegas, NV, where he learned to work with the General Dynamics F-16 and taught others about aircraft weapons. He left the Air Force with honor in 1996 after serving for eight years.

Political career

Kevin Thompson was elected to the City of Mesa Council in August 2014 and began his service in January 2015. He was the third person to hold this position for District 6 and was re-elected in 2018 without any opponents. He started his second term in January 2019 and served until January 3, 2023.

During his time on the council, Thompson worked to create jobs and improve public safety. He helped guide the growth and development in southeast Mesa from 2015 to 2023. He also pushed for better pay and more staff for Mesa's fire, medical, and law enforcement teams. In December 2019, he helped the city adopt new design guidelines to improve building quality.

In 2022, Thompson decided to run for a seat on the Arizona Corporation Commission. His goals were to make the commission work better, give employees fair pay, fill empty jobs, and keep Arizona's energy supply safe and strong. He and another Republican, Nick Myers, won the primary and later the general election in November.
