Krzysztof Jerzy Wielicki, born on January 5, 1950, is a famous Polish mountaineer. He is known as one of the greatest climbers from Poland. Wielicki achieved a major milestone by being the 5th person in the world to climb all fourteen of the very tall mountains called eight-thousanders.
One of his most amazing feats was climbing three of the world’s highest peaks—Mount Everest, Kangchenjunga, and Lhotse—during the harsh winter months. He was the first person ever to do this.
Wielicki is also a member of The Explorers Club, a group for people who have made important discoveries and explorations. His climbs and adventures have inspired many people around the world.
Life
Krzysztof Wielicki was born on January 5, 1950, in Szklarka Przygodzicka, Greater Poland. He studied electronics at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology and began climbing in 1970.
He achieved his first major international success in 1973 in the Dolomites. In 1980, he and Leszek Cichy became the first people to climb an eight-thousand-meter mountain in winter by reaching the top of Mount Everest. He was also the first to make successful winter climbs of Kangchenjunga and Lhotse.
He has climbed many famous mountains alone, including Broad Peak, Dhaulagiri, Shishapangma, Gasherbrum II, and Nanga Parbat. In 2022, he published an autobiography about his solo climbs.
Recognition
In 2001, Krzysztof Wielicki received the Lowell Thomas Award from The Explorers Club. In 2003, he was given a special honor called the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta for his amazing work in climbing and for helping others love this sport.
Later, in 2015, he was given a special medal from Wrocław University of Science and Technology for his achievements in climbing. In 2017, an asteroid discovered by Vincenzo Silvano Casulli was named 173094 Wielicki in his honor. In 2018, he and Reinhold Messner shared the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports. Then, in 2019, he received the Piolet d'Or for Lifetime Achievement.
