Lake Temescal

Lake Temescal is a small reservoir located in the Oakland hills, in northeastern Oakland, California. It serves as the main feature of the Temescal Regional Recreational Area, also known as the Temescal Regional Park, which was originally called Lake Temescal Regional Park. This beautiful spot is part of the East Bay Regional Park District, offering people a place to enjoy nature and outdoor activities. Visitors can relax by the water, go walking along the trails, and appreciate the peaceful surroundings in this lovely area of California.

History

Lake Temescal was named after Temescal Creek, which was dammed in 1868 to create a reservoir for drinking water in the East Bay area. The dam was built by the Contra Costa Water Company, owned by Anthony Chabot. Before it was dammed, the lake was a special kind of pond called a sag pond, formed by the Hayward Fault.

In the late 1800s, artists and writers liked to camp near the lake's shores. In 1921, a power substation was built above the lake, and it is still in use today. During the early 1900s, a railroad ran along the eastern side of the lake. In the 1930s, the lake was extended into Temescal Canyon, but later the inlet was filled in for a major road project.

In 1936, Lake Temescal opened to the public as one of the first parks in the East Bay Regional Park District. It had a beach-like shore for swimming, a boathouse, trails, and picnic areas.

Present-day function

Lake Temescal is a fun place to visit, with an artificial beach and many kinds of fish like rainbow trout, largemouth bass, and catfish. The park is open from early morning until night and welcomes about 200,000 visitors each year.

The lake is getting shallower over time because of dirt washing into it, so workers need to clean it out sometimes. It used to be much deeper, but now its deepest point is about 20 feet. During a big fire in 1991, helicopters used the lake to get water, which made the lake mostly empty for a while. Sometimes the beach has to close because of harmful algae growing in the water. The beach house can also be rented for special events like weddings.
