Land warfare, also called ground warfare, is when battles happen mostly on land. It involves many soldiers using different skills, methods, and weapons in many kinds of places and weather conditions. Because it often happens near towns and villages, land warfare is very important for countries when they plan how to protect themselves.

Throughout history, land warfare has changed a lot. Long ago, battles were often fought by large groups of people with simple weapons attacking straight ahead. Today, armies use well-trained soldiers with many types of weapons and advanced technology. They follow different plans for how to fight depending on the situation.

Since World War II, land battles usually include three main types of units: infantry soldiers, tanks, and artillery. These units work together and sometimes use ships, airplanes, and helicopters to fight from different places. This makes land warfare a complex and important part of how countries defend themselves.

Land forces

Land forces include personnel, weapons platforms, vehicles, and support elements that work on land to complete their missions.

Infantry

Main article: Infantry

Infantry are soldiers who fight mainly on foot using small arms in groups called military units. They can be taken to battle by ships, automobiles, skis, cargo planes, or other ways.

Combat vehicles

Main article: Combat vehicle

Combat vehicles help move big weapons to fight enemy forces, including other combat vehicles. These vehicles are made to drive in tough terrain and are usually protected with armor and other safety features.

Examples of combat vehicles are main battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and self-propelled artillery.

Artillery

Main article: Artillery

Artillery has historically meant any tool used to throw objects during war. The word comes from an old French word meaning "to equip". Artillery can include weapons that defend coastal areas and also land-based weapons used in battles. With the start of airplanes, it also included weapons to defend against aircraft.

Combined arms

Main article: Combined arms

Combined arms is a way of fighting that brings together different parts of the military, like self-propelled artillery, mechanized infantry, and aircraft. The goal is to work together so that each part helps the others do better in battle.

By landscape and climate

Land battles can happen in many different places and weather conditions. Some of these places include cold arctic areas, hot deserts, dense jungles, tall mountains, and crowded cities.
