English is the official language of Belize. It is used in schools, government, and most news. Even though English is important, not many people speak it as their first language.

In Belize, people often switch between English and Belizean Creole, which is a mix of languages. This helps people communicate in both ways. In 2007, a special book was made to help people learn both English and Creole better.

Spanish

Main article: Belizean Spanish

About 52.9% of people in Belize identify as Mestizo, Latino, or Hispanic. Spanish is spoken by about 56.6% of the population as their first language, and it is also taught in schools to children who do not speak it at home. In some northern towns like Corozal and San Pedro, people often use a mix of Spanish and Belizean Creole, called "Kitchen Spanish."

Many people in Belize can speak more than one language, and because the country is small and surrounded by nations where Spanish is spoken, learning multiple languages is very encouraged.

Other languages

Belize is home to three Mayan languages: Q’eqchi’, Mopan, and Yucatec Maya. About 16,100 people speak the Garifuna language.

German is spoken in Mennonite communities. Most Mennonites use Plautdietsch in daily life, while a smaller group speaks Pennsylvania German. They use an old version of German in their churches and writings.
