Las Piedras is a city in the Canelones Department of Uruguay. It is an important place in the country and was the seventh most populated city according to the census done in 2011. The city gives its name to the municipality, which means it is the main town of that area. It is a part of Uruguay, a country known for its beautiful landscapes and friendly people.
Geography
Las Piedras is a city found on the east side of Route 5, just a little way north of where Montevideo Department starts. It is close to the towns of La Paz and Montevideo and is part of the bigger area around Montevideo. Two small rivers, Arroyo Colorado and Arroyo de las Piedras, run near the city.
The weather there has warm, sticky summers and winters that are usually not too cold. Las Piedras has what scientists call a humid subtropical climate, written as "Cfa" on climate maps, using the Köppen Climate Classification system .
History
Las Piedras was founded in 1744 and was originally called "San Isidro".
On May 18, 1811, a leader named José Gervasio Artigas led forces to victory against Spain in the Battle of Las Piedras. This battle was an important step toward Uruguay becoming an independent country. Later, in 1925, Las Piedras was officially recognized as a city.
Health
Las Piedras has a public hospital called «Dr. Alfonso Espínola», which is part of the Administración de los Servicios de Salud del Estado. There is also a private clinic that belongs to CRAMI, which started in 2010.

According to the 2011 census, Las Piedras had a population of 71,258 people. In 2010, the local government estimated that the whole area around Las Piedras had about 79,412 people.

There is also St. Adolph Parish Church in El Dorado, which is also Roman Catholic. Another place is Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish Church in San Isidro, which is Roman Catholic and associated with the Pilgrims of the Eucharist. Lastly, St. Anthony of Padua Church in Pueblo Nuevo is also a Roman Catholic place of worship.
Sport
Las Piedras has one professional football team. The team is called Juventud de Las Piedras.
