Lastoursville

Lastoursville, also known as Mandji, is a city in east-central Gabon. It sits along the Ogooué River, the Trans-Gabon Railway, and the N3 road. The city was first established as a place where people were unfairly kept and moved, named Mandji. Later, it was called Maadiville in 1883 and then renamed in 1886 after a person named François Rigail de Lastours.

Over time, Lastoursville grew because of its palm oil production and became an important place for government work. It also became a key spot for groups that helped spread their beliefs and teachings. Today, the town is famous for its interesting caves. Lastoursville sits at a height of 206 meters above sea level.

Caves

There are more than 40 caves in a 90-square-kilometer area near the town, hidden in thick rainforest. People have used these caves for special ceremonies for over 7,000 years.

World Heritage Status

The caves were added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on October 20, 2005, as part of the Mixed (Cultural + Natural) category.

Climate

Lastoursville experiences a tropical climate with high temperatures and plenty of rainfall throughout the year. The city is influenced by the nearby Ogooué River, which helps create a warm and moist environment. This climate supports lush forests and various plant life in the surrounding areas.
